Current Load Control Status
ON = Not being controlled
OFF = Under control
Load management refers to the control of various customer electric loads during times of peak usage on the electric system. By managing loads so that they are not all on at the same time, Clay-Union Electric is able to reduce wholesale power purchases, thus saving money and resources.
The load management system of our power supplier, East River Electric, has been operating for over 25 years and has saved electric cooperative customers more than $90 million in avoided wholesale power costs. Over 60,000 different electric loads in homes, farms, and businesses of member consumers throughout eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota are connected to the system. These loads include electric water heaters, air conditioners, irrigation systems, and large industrial processes. Clay-Union Electric members willing to put some electric loads under load management are eligible for special rebates and electric rates.
Control is initiated monthly through a highly sophisticated system that communicates with control receivers connected to the various loads. East River operates the system on a federated basis on behalf of its member systems to moderate wholesale power costs, improve system efficiencies, and provide member consumers with energy options.
If you have a heat pump to heat your home, you may be eligible to receive a $.022 per kWh credit for the energy used to electrically heat and cool your home. If you have an electric water heater under the load management system, you may be eligible to receive an $6.00 credit per month on your electric bill if over 600 kWh was used during the month.
